The Centre caters for the needs of learners with severe or profound and multiple
learning difficulties and we also have facilities, based on a TEACCH approach, for
children with autism. Our learners are currently aged from 9-19 years and are based
on the Josephine Butler campus. From September 2011 learners aged 4-9 years will
join the Centre but will remain on their current site at Abbeyfields school in Morpeth
before transferring across to the new Josephine Butler campus building in March 2012.
Our catchment area is South East Northumberland and includes Morpeth, Blyth,
Cramlington, Bedlington & Ashington. The learners receive their education from a
specialist team of teachers and teaching assistants working within the Centre. We
have a well-resourced learning environment that includes the following; food
technology/life skills rooms, multi-sensory rooms, ict room fitted with switches and
touch screens, trampoline for rebound therapy and trampolining, fully adapted
minibuses, sensory garden and hydrotherapy pool. The Centre is supported by a
range of specialist agencies including; speech & language therapists,
physiotherapists, Academy medical officer & nurse, community nursing team, social
services, educational and clinical psychologists. For each of our learners we offer an
individualised curriculum, set out in an Individual Education Plan (IEP). Our
curriculum is drawn from National Curriculum core & foundation subjects and an
essential curriculum that covers all aspects of Personal and Social Education. We
also provide a sensory curriculum to support the needs of our learners with
profound and multiple learning disabilities. We hope that you have found this
information useful. If you would like to know anything further or to arrange a visit to
the Centre then please do get in touch. |
